The back story

About Romanian wine: Dealu Mare and beyond

Romania is one of Europe’s larger wine producers, with native grapes found almost nowhere else, and some of its best vineyards lie just an hour north of Bucharest, on the hills of Dealu Mare.

Native grapes

Look for Fetească Neagră, a deep, spicy red; Fetească Albă and Fetească Regală, fresh whites; Tămâioasă Românească, aromatic and often sweet; and Grasă de Cotnari, from Moldavia.

Dealu Mare

The south-facing hills of Dealu Mare, about an hour north of Bucharest, are known for rich reds, and many wineries welcome visitors for tastings.

Fetească Neagră, the “black maiden”, is Romania’s signature red.

Other regions

Other famous regions include Cotnari and Murfatlar near the Black Sea, and Transylvania, known for crisp whites.

Our advice: ask a wine bar for a flight of Fetească Neagră from different producers, and if you have a car, visit a Dealu Mare winery on the way to the mountains.
