The back story

About The Athénée Palace: a hotel full of stories

The Athénée Palace, opened in 1914 on the square beside the Romanian Athenaeum, was Bucharest’s most fashionable hotel between the wars, a meeting place for diplomats, journalists and society, and the setting of many a story of intrigue. Today it is the InterContinental Athénée Palace.

A grand hotel

The Athénée Palace opened in 1914 and was rebuilt in Art Deco style in the 1930s, overlooking the Athenaeum and the gardens.

A meeting place

Between the wars and during the Second World War, its bar and lobby were the meeting place of diplomats, journalists and adventurers, and the hotel inspired books about the period.

Between the wars, the Athénée Palace lobby was the best place in Bucharest to hear the news.

Today

Restored, it is now the InterContinental Athénée Palace, with a spa and a grand lobby.

Our advice: have a drink in the lobby bar before a concert at the Athenaeum next door.
