Bucharest’s Old Town is two places. By day it is a quarter of churches, inns, passages and banks, with some of the city’s finest architecture. By night it becomes the busiest nightlife district in Romania.
By day
Start at Stavropoleos Monastery, with its carved stone porch and quiet courtyard, then see the CEC Palace, the Macca-Villacrosse passage under its glass roof, the ruins of the Old Princely Court and Cărturești Carusel, the white spiral bookshop in a restored bank.

After dark, bars and clubs open their doors along Lipscani, Șelari, Covaci and Smârdan, from cocktail bars and rooftops to pubs and clubs.
Come in the morning for the architecture, at night for the buzz.
Eating
Caru’ cu Bere, the great Gothic Revival beer hall of 1879, and Hanul lui Manuc serve Romanian classics in historic settings.
Our advice: walk the Old Town in the morning, have lunch at Caru’ cu Bere, and return in the evening for a rooftop drink. Keep an eye on your belongings and agree prices before you order.
