About To Sofia: across the Danube

Crossing the Danube into Bulgaria is a classic overland journey. By road, Sofia is around five to six hours away, over the Friendship Bridge between Giurgiu and Ruse. In summer, CFR Călători runs a direct train from Gara de Nord to Sofia (in 2026, from mid-June to mid-October), and coaches run all year. Our sister guide, the ULTIMATE Sofia City Guide, covers the Bulgarian capital: Roman Serdica, the hot springs and Vitosha Mountain.

Why it's on our list

  • About 5–6 hours by road
  • Across the Danube at Giurgiu–Ruse
  • A direct summer train

Opening hours, prices and seasonal openings change, so please check with To Sofia: across the Danube before you go.
