Stavropoleos Monastery

Stavropoleos was built in 1724 and is one of the treasures of the Brâncovenesc style, Wallachia’s own blend of Byzantine, Ottoman and Renaissance art. Its porch of carved stone columns, painted walls and quiet courtyard of old gravestones feel a world away from the busy streets around. The monastery keeps a library of Byzantine music, and its choir is famous; listen out for chant at the services.
